TL;DR
Tanzania offers some of the most incredible wildlife experiences in Africa, but it’s a very different safari experience than Kenya. From seasonality and longer drive times to national park regulations and how much your accommodations shape the trip, there are a few key things to understand before you go. When planned well, Tanzania can completely exceed your expectations!
What to Know Before Planning a Tanzania Safari
Before this trip, I thought I had a pretty good idea of what to expect.
And honestly… I was wrong.
Tanzania surprised me in so many ways. It’s wild, it’s beautiful, and the sheer number of animals you see is hard to put into words. But it also comes with a few things that are really important to understand before you start planning.
So if Tanzania is on your list, here are five things I think everyone should know before they go.
5 Things You Need to Know Before Traveling to Tanzania
1. When You Go Really Matters
Timing your trip to Tanzania is one of the most important pieces of planning.
We were there toward the end of a rainy season, which meant everything was incredibly green and beautiful. But the Great Migration hadn’t fully arrived yet in the area we were visiting.
That’s something I always talk through with clients. Your timing should match what you want to experience!
If your dream is to see the Great Migration, we plan your trip around that. If you want lush landscapes and fewer crowds, that’s a different conversation.
There’s no “bad” time to go, but there is a right time for your specific goals.
2. You’ll Spend More Time Driving Than You Might Expect
One thing that surprised me was how much more driving we did in Tanzania compared to Kenya.
In Kenya, it’s very common to use bush planes to move between locations. Tanzania doesn’t have that same level of infrastructure unless you’re staying at certain high-end properties.
Because of that, it’s not unusual to have longer travel days between camps. Some drives can be several hours.
The upside is that you’re still seeing wildlife along the way, so it never feels like a typical road trip. But it’s something to be aware of when setting expectations for your itinerary.
3. National Parks Come With More Restrictions
Tanzania’s safari experience is largely based in national parks, which are vast and absolutely stunning. But they do come with more rules.
Unlike some conservancies, you’re typically required to stay on designated roads, which can impact how closely you’re able to track animals.
We even had one day where heavy rain caused the river to rise quickly and wash out a bridge inside the park. Cars were backed up for miles on both sides, all waiting for the water to go down!
It was one of those moments where you realize how wild and unpredictable nature can be. And it’s also a good reminder that flexibility is part of the experience.
4. The Ngorongoro Crater Is Truly One of a Kind
The Ngorongoro Crater was everything I hoped it would be and more! It’s hard to describe until you see it in person. You’re essentially at the top of an ancient volcanic crater, looking down into this wide, green landscape filled with wildlife!
The density of animals there is incredible. It almost doesn’t feel real. It’s one of those places where you look around and think… how is this even possible?
If Tanzania is on your list, this is absolutely a place I would include in your itinerary!
5. Where You Stay Shapes Your Entire Experience
Yes, this is something I say often, but Tanzania really drove it home. Where you stay is not just where you sleep. It completely shapes your safari.
Each camp has its own feel, its own level of guiding, and its own way of experiencing the environment.
We stayed in both more luxurious properties and more rustic tented camps. And while they were very different, both experiences were memorable in their own way.
One night, we were in a more rustic camp and could hear lions just outside our tent. It definitely got your attention! Also, I found a huge centipede in my bed…which tells you everything you need to know about how “in nature” you really are in some of these camps.
The next morning, a guide walked us to the main lodge because it wasn’t safe to walk alone, and shortly after that we were floating over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon at sunrise. Crazy right?
Moments like that stay with you. And they happen because of where you choose to stay.
Having someone who has been there, understands the differences between properties, and knows how to structure the trip well is what turns a good safari into an incredible one.
That’s also where relationships really matter. The guides, the camps, the teams on the ground… those are the people who shape your experience day to day.
I’ve built connections with the partners and teams in these destinations, so when I’m planning a trip, I know who I’m trusting with your experience. It’s not just about where you stay, it’s about who is taking care of you while you’re there.
Why Tanzania Feels So Different
One thing that really stood out to me is the sheer number of animals. It’s not just about what you see, it’s how many you see.
Imagine…large herds moving across the landscape, multiple lions in one game drive, elephants traveling in big family groups. It feels big, active and alive in a way that’s hard to fully explain until you experience it yourself!
And honestly, whatever you think it’s going to be…it will probably exceed that.
Tanzania Is Not a DIY Trip
If there’s one thing I would strongly recommend, it’s not trying to plan a Tanzania safari on your own.
There are so many moving parts. Lodges, transfers, park regulations, timing between locations. And those details make a huge difference in how your trip feels.
Having someone who has been there, understands the differences between properties, and knows how to structure the trip well is what turns a good safari into an incredible one.
That’s a big part of why I spend time traveling like this. I’m paying attention to everything…how the camps feel, how the guides interact with guests, how the days flow, and what actually makes one experience stand out from another.
So when I’m helping you plan a trip, it’s not based on what looks good online. It’s based on what I’ve experienced firsthand and what I know will work best for you!
If Tanzania is on your list, I’d love to help you start mapping it out. We can hop on a call and talk through what you’re envisioning and how to make it come together.
