TL;DR
Kenya offers an incredible mix of wildlife, luxury safari lodges, and meaningful cultural experiences. On my recent trip, I explored several regions of the country… from the iconic Giraffe Manor in Nairobi to remote conservancies and the Maasai Mara…experiencing everything from eco-lodges to ultra-luxury safari retreats. Each destination offered something unique, but all shared one thing in common: unforgettable wildlife encounters and beautifully curated safari experiences.
My Kenya Safari Itinerary: Luxury Lodges, Wildlife, and Unforgettable Experiences
There are some trips that stay with you long after you return home. Like it’s always there in the back of your mind beckoning you to come back.
For me, Kenya was one of those places.
From the moment we landed, the experience felt like an absolute dream. The itinerary was thoughtfully planned and the people were incredibly welcoming. It’s the kind of place where every day brings something new…wildlife sightings, beautiful landscapes, and incredible cultural moments.
Here’s a look at the journey through Kenya and the incredible places we experienced along the way!

Arrival in Nairobi
Our trip began with an international flight from Dallas to Doha, followed by a flight from Doha to Nairobi. After a quick 23 hours and we landed in Nairobi!
One of the things I always appreciate when traveling internationally (especially after a long flight) is a smooth airport experience. When we landed, we were met right at the gate by a VIP meet-and-greet assistant who guided us through customs, baggage claim and escorted us to our driver who was waiting for us outside. It made everything flow so much more easily after such a long travel day and took all the worry out of arriving so late at night.
Palacina Residence & Suites
For our first evening in Nairobi, we stayed at Palacina Residence & Suites, which is just a short drive from the airport. After such a long travel day, we were greeted with a warm welcome and our rooms were turned down and ready for us.
One thing I often recommend when planning a safari is giving yourself that first night to settle in. Having time to relax, adjust to the time change, and simply take a breath made the beginning of the trip feel much more enjoyable and set the tone for the adventure ahead!
A Night at the Famous Giraffe Manor
The next day, we transferred to one of the most iconic properties in Kenya: Giraffe Manor.
If you’ve ever seen photos of giraffes leaning through windows during breakfast, you’ve probably seen this place. And yes…it really is as magical as it looks!

Giraffe Manor is known worldwide, and rooms can sometimes have waitlists of over a year. We were fortunate enough to stay in the Karen Blixen suite, which was absolutely incredible!
During our stay we experienced:
- Incredible photo ops with the giraffes
- Learning about the breeding and conservation program at the Manor
- Exploring the beautiful historic manor grounds
The food was incredible, and the experience itself felt truly special. It’s one of those places that actually lives up to the hype you see online!
Safari Adventure at Borana Conservancy
From Nairobi, we boarded a bush plane and flew to Borana Conservancy on the Laikipia Plateau.
This region is known for having some of the highest wildlife densities in Kenya, and it did not disappoint. Borana is particularly known for its conservation work, especially with black rhinos, and the property itself offers a more adventurous safari experience. From horseback safaris to mountain biking through the plains, there is so much to experience here!
The lodge here felt very much like luxury safari treehouses. The lodge had a rustic eco-lodge atmosphere where you really feel connected to the wildlife and landscape around you.
During our time there, we saw:
- Lions
- Cape buffalo
- Rhinos (and baby!)
- Elephants (and babies!!)
- Zebras
- Giraffes
The only animal we didn’t spot was the elusive leopard!!

We spent two nights here and had incredible wildlife sightings on our game drives. It was one of those places where every drive felt a little different, and you never knew what you were going to see next.
If you love the idea of a safari that feels adventurous and deeply connected to nature, this region is an amazing experience. From our rooms at night, we could hear the lions roaring and the hippos bellowing in the river below! It was incredible!
Segera Retreat: A Luxury Safari Experience
After Borana, we took another bush plane to Segera Retreat, which ended up being my personal favorite stop of the entire trip!
The airstrip is located directly next to the property (meaning you step off the plane and are immediately at the lodge)! No long transfers, no additional drives. Just instant arrival into an incredible setting.

Segera feels like the perfect balance of luxury, privacy, and nature. The property is owned by the former CEO of Puma, and every detail of the experience reflects that thoughtful and intentional design.
I stayed in the Greenhouse Villa, a two-bedroom villa that was once an actual greenhouse and has been beautifully converted into a luxury accommodation. What makes Segera especially unique is the attention to privacy.
Instead of dining with other guests, every stay includes private dining experiences curated specifically for you. It’s an incredibly intimate and relaxing experience.
During our stay we enjoyed:
- Game drives with amazing wildlife sightings
- A spa experience on property
- Private dining experiences
- Beautiful accommodations surrounded by nature
We saw cheetahs, lions, giraffes, elephants, and hyenas…and during the last night of the trip, on our last game drive, we found a leopard! The magic of staying on a reserve, like Segera, is you have the freedom to off-road to track the animals. We spent over an hour tracking the leopard and it was truly incredible.

The Maasai Mara & Cottar’s 1920 Camp
Our final stop in Kenya was the legendary Maasai Mara, where we stayed at Cottar’s 1920 Camp.
This is a luxury tented safari camp that has been family-owned for generations. Staying in a tented camp in the Mara is a truly special experience. It combines the romance of classic safari travel with thoughtful luxury and incredible guiding.

When we arrived, we were greeted by our guide, Enoch, a Maasai warrior and expert tracker.
One of the things I love most about travel is the opportunity to connect with people and learn about their cultures and traditions. Enoch was incredibly generous in sharing his knowledge about Maasai life, traditions, and the land itself.
During our time in the Maasai Mara we experienced:
- Game drives across the Mara
- Incredible wildlife sightings
- Visiting a Maasai village
- Cultural experiences, including traditional dancing
These moments made the trip feel deeper than just a safari. It was an opportunity to connect on a human level. When you have the opportunity to understand people’s culture and traditions, it personalizes the experience in an unforgettable way!
Why Kenya Is an Unforgettable Safari Destination
What I loved most about Kenya is how many different types of safari experiences you can have within one trip.
One moment you’re staying in a conservancy focused on protecting wildlife, and the next you’re enjoying a beautifully designed luxury lodge or learning about Maasai traditions in the Mara. Each region feels a little different, which makes the entire journey feel layered and incredibly memorable.
Kenya offers such a unique combination of experiences…incredible wildlife viewing, breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and safari lodges that are thoughtfully designed to immerse you in the environment.
When the itinerary is thoughtfully planned, the whole journey just flows and it becomes the kind of trip that stays with you long after you return home!
FAQS
How many days do you need for a Kenya safari?
Most Kenya safaris are best planned for 7–10 days. This allows time to visit multiple regions (like Nairobi, Laikipia, and the Maasai Mara) without feeling rushed. Shorter trips are possible, but a longer itinerary creates a more relaxed, seamless experience.
When is the best time to visit Kenya for a safari?
Kenya is a year-round safari destination, but the best wildlife viewing is typically during the dry seasons (June–October and January–March). If seeing the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara is a priority, July through October is especially popular. I went in February for this trip and it was green and lush and BABY SEASON!! I loved it!
Is Kenya a good safari destination for families?
Yes, Kenya can be an incredible destination for families, especially when the trip is thoughtfully planned. Many safari lodges offer family-friendly accommodations, private guides, and flexible game drive schedules, making it easier to travel with children while still having an amazing experience! This is definitely a trip that they’ll remember forever!
What is the difference between a conservancy and a national park?
A conservancy is a privately managed area focused on conservation and often offers a more exclusive experience with fewer vehicles and more flexibility (think off-road driving). A national park is publicly managed and can have more visitors, but you’re limited to the roads provided. While it still offers incredible wildlife viewing, conservancies and reserves offer more flexibility!. Both are valuable, and many itineraries include a mix of both for a well-rounded safari experience.
Are safari lodges in Kenya luxury or rustic?
Kenya offers a wide range of accommodations. You can experience Eco-lodges that feel more rustic and nature-focused or Luxury safari lodges and villas with high-end amenities and private experiences. Your itinerary can be customized based on your travel style, whether you prefer adventure, luxury, or a blend of both.
How do you get between safari locations?
Most travelers move between regions using small bush planes, which are efficient and offer beautiful views along the way. These flights make it easy to experience multiple parts of Kenya without long drive times.
Is a Kenya safari difficult to plan on your own?
Short answer…yes. Planning a safari is so complex and not something to try to DIY. It involves coordinating lodges, flights, transfers, guides, seasons, and timing between regions, which can quickly become complex. Add in country visas and permits, and it gets even more complicated! Working with a travel advisor who has firsthand destination experience helps simplify the process, ensuring everything is thoughtfully planned and flows seamlessly from one destination to the next!
