TL;DR
Before this trip, I thought I understood Africa pretty well. After spending over a month traveling through Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda, I realized how much nuance there is between destinations, safari styles, lodges, guiding, and experiences. The biggest thing I learned? Not all safaris are created equal and the details truly shape the experience.
I Wanted to Truly Experience Africa for Myself
Before this trip, I had already spent a lot of time researching Africa and planning itineraries for clients. I knew the destinations, understood the logistics, and had relationships with suppliers and camps throughout different regions. But I also knew there’s only so much you can learn from research alone.
I wanted to actually experience these destinations for myself. I wanted to understand how the camps felt in real life, how the days flowed, how different safaris compared, and what truly made one experience stand out from another.
So I spent 4+ weeks traveling throughout Kenya and Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda fully immersing myself in the experience. I am here to tell you, it changed the way I’ll plan safaris for clients forever!
Because there’s such a difference between knowing a destination on paper and truly understanding how it feels once you’re there.

Not All Safaris Feel the Same
Some camps felt ultra luxurious and private, while others felt much more adventurous and deeply connected to nature. Neither was better or worse, they were just completely different experiences and catered to different types of travelers.
That’s one of the biggest things this trip reinforced for me. What feels “perfect” for one person might not be the right fit for someone else.
Some travelers want the slower pace and privacy of a luxury lodge with incredible service and curated experiences. Others want a more rugged safari where you really feel immersed in the environment, even if that means hearing lions outside your tent at night or finding the occasional unexpected critter in your room! (Like the ginormous millipede in my bed!)
Those are the kinds of nuances that are really hard to understand from photos or online reviews alone.
Experiencing these camps firsthand gave me a much deeper understanding of how differently a safari can feel depending on where you stay, which is something I now get to bring back to my clients when helping them decide what type of experience is actually the best fit for them.
The Guides Shape Your Entire Experience
This might have been the biggest surprise for me during the entire trip. Before going, I obviously expected the wildlife to be incredible. And it was. But what I didn’t fully expect was how much the guides would shape the experience.
A great guide does so much more than spot animals. They help you understand what you’re seeing, how the ecosystem works, the behaviors of the animals, and the history and culture surrounding the places you’re visiting.
Some of them could spot animals from distances that didn’t even seem possible. Others would start telling stories while we drove through the bush that made you feel so connected to the land around you.
Some of my favorite moments from the trip weren’t even the wildlife sightings themselves. They were the conversations we had with guides, drivers, camp staff, and local teams along the way.
There was so much pride in sharing their country with us. So much warmth and kindness in every interaction. That human connection completely changed the experience for me. It made the trip feel bigger than just a safari. It felt personal. Meaningful. Like we weren’t just observing a place, but actually connecting with it in a much deeper way.
Luxury in Africa Looks Different
One thing I loved most about Africa was how different luxury felt there. It wasn’t flashy or over the top. It felt quieter. More thoughtful. More connected to the experience itself.
Luxury looked like waking up before sunrise with tea in hand while watching the Serengeti slowly come to life around you. It looked like private dinners under the stars after a long game drive. It looked like camp staff remembering your favorite drink or knowing that you don’t like vegetables and creating a dinner plate with not a green thing in sight! 😍
And somehow, even while staying in the middle of the bush with lions outside your tent at night, you still felt completely taken care of.
That’s the kind of luxury that stayed with me long after the trip ended. Not because it felt extravagant, but because it felt personal. And truly, I think that’s what makes safari travel so special. It’s not just about beautiful accommodations. It’s about how those accommodations make you feel while you’re there.

The Right Camp Changes Everything
This trip made me realize just how much accommodations shape a safari. One camp might be perfect for honeymooners wanting privacy and luxury. Another might be ideal for travelers who want a more rugged, adventurous experience where you feel deeply immersed in nature.
Staying at places like Lemala Camps gave me such a better understanding of how differently safari camps can feel and how important it is to match travelers with the right experience for their travel style. Check them out here!
One of the camps we stayed at was much more rustic than the others and yes…there was a giant millipede in my bed (yikes!!) But that same night we could hear lions outside our tent. And the next morning we were floating over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon at sunrise. That’s Africa… It’s wild, beautiful and unexpected!
Why This Trip Changed How I Plan Safaris For Clients
I absorbed everything during this trip.
The services, differences between countries, which camps felt worth the investment and which experiences truly stood out.
As we moved through different countries and camps, I found myself paying attention to everything. How long transfer days affected the rhythm of the trip. How much a great guide could completely elevate the experience. Or how the smallest details often became the moments people remembered most.
Because when I plan safaris for clients now, I’m not relying on brochures or supplier descriptions. I’m helping people based on real experiences, firsthand knowledge, and relationships with the teams on the ground who make these trips extraordinary.
And honestly, I think that makes all the difference.
If Africa has been sitting on your “one day” list, I’d love to help you start turning it into a real plan. We can hop on a call, talk through your ideas, and figure out what kind of safari experience would be the best fit for you and your family.
